EPISODE 78 – PODCAST TRANSCRIPT

Hi there, welcome back to Kelly Martin Speaks. I’m your host Kelly Martin and this is episode 78.

Today I am going to talk about dropping the sheep status. Getting out from the crowd, allowing yourself to no longer stay in the comfort of the known.

Osho says:

Society cannot tolerate individuality, because individuality will not follow like a sheep. Individuality has the quality of the lion; the lion moves alone. The sheep are always in the crowd, hoping that being in the crowd will feel cozy. Being in the crowd one feels more protected, secure. If somebody attacks, there is every possibility in a crowd to save yourself. But alone? – only the lions move alone.

Now first you need to ask yourself, are you a sheep or a lion? Do you tend to sway more to the opinions of other people in what you do, your behaviour and how you live your life? Or are you more of a rebellious outsider, someone who prefers the adventure of uncertainty and the unknown?

Let’s face it, being a sheep is being secure and feeling safe and protected.

I was the sheep for a very long as a people pleaser. And interestingly we can even persuade ourselves into thinking we are not sheep but independent free thinkers when we are not.

How do you know you are not the lion and pretending you are?

When you do everything you can to fit in or belong. You could follow an ideology that sounds independent, progressive and inventive, unique, but if it is socially comfortable and even socially acceptable, you may have just conned yourself into thinking you’re free.

To free ourselves from being a sheep, we need to take the risk of questioning the status quo. And moreso, even questioning the reality of the group mind.

For example, as I do this podcast this week, huge protests are taking place in the USA with regards to the impeachment of Donald Trump and on this day Donald Trump has  been impeached. Now you may be pro Trump or anti Trump, but if you were a lion, you would question…if people are protesting what do those who support Trump think right now? And I am talking about the ordinary voters who had real honest reasons for voting him in.

My answer would be, they are pissed off, feel unheard, disrespected and ignored as voters and what could be the result of this?

It could be ‘Donald Trump getting into power again and not being impeached’.

So protests, while greatly invigorating, sometimes there is another side to what is happening that could greatly determine the outcome or the preferred outcome in an unexpected direction.

I wrote about this in my recent post on Kelly Martin Speaks called ’10 Powerful Reasons To Accept The Other’. If we want change in our lives and outer world, we need to get out of the comfort zone of the known and mix things up a bit. Do what we can to get out of the realm of conventional comfortable thinking, even when comfortable thinking has a mask of ‘unconventional’.

It Comes Down To Conditioning

sheep group mind

It all comes down to conditioning, how we are conditioned to live.

I was conditioned by my parents, teachers, my peer group, my country, my culture, the town I was born in. All bring about a way of making choices in a certain direction.

If I continued without questioning the conditioning from all of these groups, I would be addicted to drama still, I would be looking for the worst in everything I see in life and people, I would be trying to please others, I would be voting in a certain way as my tribal upbringing in the North East of England would require. I would be in a job that was accepted and acceptable. I would be married, with children and would own my own house.

Needless to say, I stepped out from the crowd some time ago, but it’s not been until 2019 that I’ve started to vocalise my new way of thinking and being.

It’s not a comfortable place, far from it. Often it can feel very uncomfortable, but the truth is, if I went back into my box of conditioning and re-joined the crowd and the familiar, I would hate myself, I would be limited and unable to have life satisfaction.

Becoming a lion is not meant to be easy, because you are stepping outside comfort zones and you are willing to talk about uncomfortable things. I do, in all honesty, sometimes think I would like to go back to being a sheep. It was easier to not question things. It was easier to take mainstream media as fact when it came to what was happening in the world, it was easier to hang around people who agreed with my way of thinking, BUT much like taking the red pill in the movie the Matrix, you can’t go back, you can only go forwards.

The personality is overlaid with conditioning, we overlay our individuality. This can change, but we have to be prepared for discomfort, to risk being disliked, to embrace being alone if we must be, and to know that once we go down that rabbit hole we can never see the world in the same way again.

To wake up from being sheep, we need to do whatever is needed to free our voice. This could be dancing, speaking gibberish, singing, break out of the mould. Say NO to those you would have said yes to when you meant no. Say YES to opportunities that make you feel scared.

Break out of the mould of the old story.

Are you willing to do this? Perhaps in 2020 you could make this choice to see yourself and the world differently from all sides.

Try it and never look back.

I hope you enjoyed this short episode; I will be taking a break from podcasting until the new year while I enjoy the holiday season with family.

I wish you all my love and a huge dose of courage so that your choices come from a deep place of power within you.

Blessings and peace for the season.
